The MSP Consortium, billed as a an association “built for MSPs by MSPs,” has been making waves in the press since its formal introduction to the public on April 21. The group, which formed under the guidance of Ciracom and Comodo (among others), has shaken up the industry standard by releasing their own remote management and monitoring (RMM) platform.

In an article by Lynn Haber of TechTarget.com, one of the more compelling arguments made in favor of joining the Consortium is the fact that their RMM tool itself is free. Haber continues:

A free RMM software just might be a big draw for MSPs, some of whom complain that existing MSP business tools are too expensive, too complicated and often don’t meet the needs of MSPs.

MSP Consortium President of the Board Amy Rutt provided one of the better quotes from the article which further speaks to that point:

“The [industry] all-stars — N-able, Autotask and Connectwise — are difficult to work with, they’re expensive and these vendors only innovate based on what they think MSPs need. They’re a mind-numbing waste of time.”

MSPs spend boatloads of money on licensing fees employing productivity and management software. Those funds saved by migrating onto a tool that was created specifically for MSPs could in turn be reallocated to bigger money drivers: sales and marketing. Oddly enough, because it was built with input from MSPs, it could also increase productivity.

The “cloud tsunami” is changing everything

Our friends over at ChannelPartnersOnline.com elaborates on just how much the cloud is changing the way MSPs do day-to-day business. Reporter Edward Gately surmised that “the rapidly growing “cloud tsunami” is forcing the MSP industry to completely transform itself, embracing consumption economics, and focusing on sales, marketing and training.”

Board President Rutt does a great job summing up the transition Ciracom, and many MSPs, are going to be forced to make should they wish to stay afloat in a changing economic landscape:

“The cloud has completely changed everything for us,” she said. “I’ve evolved my business to be more of a cloud services brokerage model. This is coming from a place of really wanting my competitor, my MSP brethren, to do really well, to have so much success.”

Having worked with Amy quite a bit now, it’s evident that cloud technology is ushering in a paradigm shift of sorts.

“With the advent of cloud, there’s more of an “interdependency than there used to be,” similar to the relationship between auto manufacturers and dealerships, she said. The consortium will provide that collaboration for MSPs,” she said.

The cloud is coming, and it’s coming fast!

Other good reads on the MSP Consortium:

Ciracom Inc. is proud to announce that they have joined the Managed Service Provider Consortium (MSPC) as one of the founding members of the initiative. In addition, Chief Cloud Fanatic and Ciracom CEO Amy Rutt has been named Board President of the Consortium and will help guide efforts in the Washington, D.C. region.

The MSPC, a national organization, was created “for the MSPs, by the MSPs,” and is the first attempt of its kind to create an open-sourced community where managed service providers can work together to ensure their needs are met by the tools they utilize on a daily basis. The aim of the MPSC, per their press release:

The MSPC, in conjunction with global IT security leader Comodo, has released a free remote management and monitoring platform tool that was designed from the ground-up to cater to the needs of the managed service providers within the Consortium.

The MSPC also hopes to provide guidance via community and collaboration in order to improve the overall business landscape. Board President Amy Rutt feels the Consortium will solve tough business problems through this community:

“A huge advantage of the MSP Consortium is that is has been designed by MSPs specifically for MSPs – giving members the ability to leverage a community of IT and security experts to help solve any technical or business challenges they are facing in building their business,” said Amy Rutt, MSPC Board President and CEO of Ciracom

Melih Abdulhayoglu, CEO of Comodo and Board Member of the MSPC, believes that this platform tool should shake-up the often closed-community industry. Said Abdulhayoglu:

“This MSP Consortium has the right vision, mindset, and opportunity to help customers across the globe integrate some of the finest technology on the planet today. The MSPC platform tool is a game changer, a unique offering for MSPC members that allows for lead exchange opportunities, helping MSPs to become more successful and profitable.”

Joining Ciracom on the board are a number of top MSPs and security technology companies:

  • MSPC Board Vice President Matt Johnson, CEO of Raven Data Technologies
  • Board Member and Security Technology Sponsor Melih Abdulhayoglu, CEO of Comodo
  • Board Member, Steve Ferman, President of Compunite Computers, Inc.
  • Board Member, Jay Hamilton, President and CEO of Presage Solutions Inc.
  • Board Member, John Lazo, President of LazoTEK Computer Solutions
